[76] stitches for your chosen size.
Join in the Round: Place a stitch marker on your right-hand needle to mark the beginning of the round. Carefully join the work in the round, ensuring that your cast-on edge is not twisted. This is a crucial step for a neat finish.
Work Ribbing: Work K1, P1 ribbing for 1 (1) [1.5] inches. This creates a snug, stretchy band that will keep the hat in place. The ribbing should look neat and even.
Knitting the Body: The Pinecone Stitch
Now for the fun part! We'll work the textured body of the beanie.
- Begin Pattern: Start working the Pinecone Stitch pattern as described above. Begin with Round 1 and continue through Round 8.
- Repeat Pattern: Continue repeating Rounds 1-8 of the Pinecone Stitch until the piece measures 3.5 (4) [4.5] inches from the cast-on edge. It's best to end after completing a full Round 8 to keep the pattern aligned for the decreases.
Shaping the Crown: Decreases
Now we'll shape the top of the beanie. As the stitches decrease, they will become too tight for the circular needle. This is the time to switch to your double-pointed needles (dpns).
- Switch to DPNs: When the stitches feel snug on the circular needle, distribute them evenly across three or four double-pointed needles. Place a marker at the beginning of the round if you haven't already.
- Round 1 (Decrease): *K2tog, k1, p1, k1; repeat from * to end. (45 (51) [57] stitches remain)
- Round 2: *P1, k1, p1, k1; repeat from * to end. (This round maintains the pattern without decreasing.)
- Round 3 (Decrease): *K2tog, p1, k1; repeat from * to end. (30 (34) [38] stitches remain)
- Round 4: *P1, k1, p1; repeat from * to end. (This round maintains the pattern without decreasing.)
- Round 5 (Decrease): *K2tog, k1; repeat from * to end. (15 (17) [19] stitches remain)
- Round 6 (Decrease): *P2tog; repeat from * to end. (8 (9) [10]Also Check Out: We think you'd love this beautiful pattern on our sister site: The Textured Terrain Throw Free Pattern
