- Scissors
- Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
- Stitch marker (optional)
- Small amount of starch (optional for stiffening)
Gauge
12 stitches and 14 rows = 4 inches in double crochet (dc), not critical for this project.
Abbreviations
- ch: chain
- sl st: slip stitch
- sc: single crochet
- dc: double crochet
- sp: space
- tr: treble crochet
Instructions
Creating the Round Base
- Start with a magic ring and secure with a slip stitch (sl st).
- Ch 4 (this counts as your first dc and ch 1). In the magic ring, work [2 dc, ch 1] six times. You should have 6 clusters of (2 dc, ch 1). Pull the magic ring tightly to close it.
- Join with a sl st to the 3rd chain of the starting ch 4. You have now created your first round.
Forming the Snowflake Points
- Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), in the first ch-1 space, work 2 dc, ch 1, and 3 dc, which creates a point of the snowflake.
- In the next ch-1 space, repeat the previous step (2 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) for each of the 6 ch-1 spaces around.
- Join with a sl st to the top of the starting ch 3.
Further Detailing the Snowflake
- Round 3: Ch 1, then sc in the same stitch. In the next space, work (sc, ch 2, sc) to create a picot point. Repeat around until you reach the starting point, then join with a sl st.
- Round 4: Ch 1, then *sc in the same stitch, ch 1, skip the next st, and sc in the next stitch; repeat from * around. Join with a sl st to complete this round.
- When finished, cut the yarn, leaving a long tail for hanging. Weave in any ends with a tapestry needle.
Adding Fringes
- To create fringes, cut 3-4 inch lengths of yarn (about 4 strands).
- Group the strands together and tie them at the top, then attach them to the tips of each snowflake point.
Finishing Touches
- If you prefer a stiffer snowflake, lightly mist with a starch solution and shape the snowflakes as desired.
- Allow to dry completely before displaying.
Final Notes
Crocheted snowflakes are versatile and can be used in various decorations. Feel free to mix up the design by using different crochet hook sizes or threads. Enjoy crafting your winter wonderland!
