Whimsical Woodland Sloth Lovey Free Pattern – Crochet Cuddly Comfort
Step-by-Step Instructions
Now for the fun part! We'll work through this pattern in sections, starting with the sloth head, then moving to the muzzle, ears, and finally the blanket body. Take your time, enjoy the process, and remember—every stitch brings you closer to a beautiful finished lovey.
SLOTH HEAD (Make 1, in Cocoa Brown)
The sloth head is worked in continuous rounds, so no joining is needed. Use a stitch marker to keep track of the beginning of each round.
Round 1: Make a magic ring, work 6 sc into the ring. (6 stitches)
Round 2: Work 2 sc in each stitch around. (12 stitches)
Round 3: [Sc in next stitch, inc] around. (18 stitches)
Round 4: [Sc in next 2 stitches, inc] around. (24 stitches)
Round 5: [Sc in next 3 stitches, inc] around. (30 stitches)
Round 6: [Sc in next 4 stitches, inc] around. (36 stitches)
Round 7: [Sc in next 5 stitches, inc] around. (42 stitches)
Rounds 8-14: Sc in each stitch around. (42 stitches) – These rounds create the height of the head, so keep your tension even.
Round 15: [Sc in next 5 stitches, dec] around. (36 stitches)
Round 16: [Sc in next 4 stitches, dec] around. (30 stitches)
Now is the time to insert the safety eyes. Position them between rounds 10 and 11, about 6 stitches apart. Push the safety eyes through from the outside to the inside, and secure the backs firmly. Begin stuffing the head with polyester fiberfill, making sure to fill it firmly but not so much that it distorts the shape.
Round 17: [Sc in next 3 stitches, dec] around. (24 stitches)
Round 18: [Sc in next 2 stitches, dec] around. (18 stitches)
Round 19: [Sc in next stitch, dec] around. (12 stitches)
Round 20: Dec around. (6 stitches)
Fasten off, leaving a long tail (about 12 inches). Thread the tail through a yarn needle, weave it through the front loops of the remaining 6 stitches, pull tight to close the hole, and secure. Set the head aside.
SLOTH MUZZLE (Make 1, in Cream)
The muzzle adds that adorable, distinctive sloth face. It's worked flat in rounds, then sewn onto the head.
Round 1: Make a magic ring, work 6 sc into the ring. (6 stitches)
Round 2: Work 2 sc in each stitch around. (12 stitches)
Round 3: [Sc in next stitch, inc] around. (18 stitches)
Round 4: Sc in each stitch around. (18 stitches)
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Using the Cocoa Brown yarn, embroider a small nose and a gentle smile in the center of the muzzle. To do this, thread a yarn needle with a small piece of CC2, and stitch a small triangle or oval for the nose, then create a curved line below it for the mouth. Sew the muzzle onto the head, centering it between the safety eyes and slightly below them. Weave in the ends.
SLOTH EARS (Make 2, in Cocoa Brown)
These cute little ears are quick to make and add so much character.
Round 1: Make a magic ring, work 6 sc into the ring. (6 stitches)
Round 2: Work 2 sc in each stitch around. (12 stitches)
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Sew the ears to the sides of the head, positioning them slightly above and behind the eyes. Weave in the ends.
BLANKET BODY (Make 1, in Sage Green and Cream)
The blanket body is a classic granny square worked in the round, starting from the center. This creates a beautiful, textured fabric with a lacy, openwork pattern that's perfect for little fingers to explore.
