Knitting Elegant Butterfly Embellished Baby Cardigan Free Pattern

Materials:

  • Light worsted yarn (Weight #3) in lavender and cream
  • Small amounts of pink yarn for butterfly details
  • 5 buttons
  • Knitting needles: 4.00mm and 5.00mm
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors

Gauge:

22 stitches and 28 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch with larger needles

Instructions:

Back:

  1. With 5.00 mm needles, cast on 60 stitches.
  2. Work in rib (K2, P2) for 6 rows.
  3. Switch to stockinette stitch and continue until piece measures 10 inches from the cast on.
  4. Bind off all stitches.

Front (Make 2):

  1. Cast on 30 stitches.
  2. Work in rib (K2, P2) for 6 rows.
  3. Switch to stockinette stitch and continue until the same length as the back.
  4. Bind off all stitches.

Sleeves (Make 2):

  1. Cast on 40 stitches.
  2. Work in rib (K2, P2) for 6 rows.
  3. Switch to stockinette stitch and knit until 8 inches from the cast on.
  4. Bind off all stitches.

Butterfly Appliqués:

  1. With cream yarn, chain 4 and join with a slip stitch to form a ring.
  2. Round 1: 8 sc into ring, join with a slip stitch.
  3. Round 2: [Chain 1, sc, hdc, dc, hdc, sc] in each stitch around, join.
  4. Use pink yarn to embroider details on butterflies.
  5. Make 10 butterflies.

Finishing:

  1. Sew shoulder seams.
  2. Attach sleeves.
  3. Sew side and sleeve seams.
  4. Pick up and knit stitches along the front edges and neckline. Work in rib (K2, P2) for 6 rows. Bind off in rib.
  5. Sew buttons evenly along one edge and make corresponding buttonholes on the opposite side.
  6. Attach butterfly appliqués as shown in the image.
