Crochet Vintage Aviator-Inspired Chic Cap Free Pattern
Materials:
- Medium weight yarn (approx. 230 yd / 210 m) - can substitute yarn of choice
- US H-8/5 mm crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge
- Yarn needle
- Stitch marker
- 1 vintage-style button (optional)
Gauge: 4” (10 cm) = 12 hdc x 14 rows in pattern.
Finished Size: 22” (56 cm) circumference.
Stitches Used:
- Chain (ch)
- Half double crochet (hdc)
- Slip stitch (sl st)
- Increasing (inc)
- Decreasing (dec)
- Working in rounds
Instructions:
- Starting Round: Ch 5, join with a sl st to form a ring.
- Round 1: Ch 2 (counts as first hdc), 9 hdc into the ring. Join with a sl st to top of ch-2. (10 hdc)
- Round 2: Ch 2, 1 hdc in same stitch, 2 hdc in each of the next 9 stitches. Join with a sl st. (20 hdc)
- Round 3: Ch 2, *1 hdc in next stitch, 2 hdc in next stitch; repeat from * around. Join. (30 hdc)
- Round 4: Ch 2, *1 hdc in next 2 stitches, 2 hdc in next stitch; repeat from * around. Join. (40 hdc)
- Round 5-10: Ch 2, hdc in each stitch around. Join.
- Round 11: Ch 1, *(hdc in next 2 stitches, hdc dec); repeat from * around. Join. (30 hdc)
- Round 12: Ch 1, hdc in each stitch around. Join.
- Round 13: Ch 1, *(hdc in next stitch, hdc dec); repeat from * around. Join. (20 hdc)
- Round 14: Ch 1, hdc in each stitch around. Join.
- Round 15: Ch 1, hdc dec around. Join. (10 hdc)
- Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Gather top and sew closed.
- Brim: Attach yarn to the first stitch of Round 5. Ch 1, hdc in each stitch around. For a decorative touch, you can add a button at the side of the brim.
Finishing:
Weave in all ends. Optionally, block your cap to shape it nicely.
