Crochet Textured Alternating Shells Cowl Free Pattern

Materials:

  • Worsted weight yarn (Approximately 200 yards)
  • 6.5mm crochet hook
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle

Gauge: 12 shells = 6 inches square

Abbreviations:

  • ch = chain
  • dc = double crochet
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • sp = space

Pattern:

  1. Chain 70 (or a multiple of 6 + 4 for desired width).
  2. Row 1: In the 4th ch from hook, make 1 dc, *skip 2 ch, (1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc) in the next ch (this is your shell), skip 2 ch; repeat from * until the last 3 ch. In the last 3 ch, make 1 dc in each ch.
  3. Row 2: Ch 3, turn. In the first sp (between shells), make (1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc). *In the next sp, (1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc); repeat from * until the end of the row. Finish with 1 dc in the last dc.
  4. Repeat Row 2 until piece measures approximately 10 inches or your desired length.
  5. Fasten off, and weave in all ends.
  6. To shape the cowl, fold it in half, bringing the ends together, and sl st to join. Weave in any remaining ends.

Finishing:

To add an extra touch, you may choose to add a decorative border or a few tassels to the ends of your cowl!
