Materials

  • Worsted weight cotton yarn (400-500 yards)
  • Crochet hook size H/8 (5 mm)
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle for weaving in ends

Gauge

14 double crochets and 8 rows = 4 inches in double crochet.

Abbreviations

  • ch = chain
  • dc = double crochet
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • sp = space

Pattern Instructions

Base of the Bag

Ch 51.

Row 1: Dc in 4th ch from hook and in each ch across (48 dc). Turn.

Row 2: Ch 3, (dc, ch 1, dc) in next st, *sk 1 st, (dc, ch 1, dc) in next st; repeat from * across, sk last st, sl st in top of beginning ch-3 to join. Turn.

Rows 3-10: Repeat Row 2, creating a total of 10 rows. Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing later.

Body of the Tote

Join yarn at one corner of the base.

Row 1: Ch 3, (dc, ch 1, dc) in the same corner, *sk 1 sp, (dc, ch 1, dc) in next sp; repeat from * across, sk last sp, sl st in top of ch-3 to join. Turn.

Rows 2-15: Repeat Row 1 until desired height is achieved, ending with a sl st to join. Fasten off.

Top Edging

With the right side facing, rejoin yarn at the top edge. Ch 1, sc in same st and each st around, placing 3 sc in each corner. Join with sl st.

Handles

Ch 100. Join with sl st to the bag at the top edge, ensuring the strap is not twisted. Sc in each ch across, and sl st to the starting point. Repeat for the other handle on the opposite side.

Assembly

Weave in all ends using the tapestry needle. Block the bag as desired to enhance the openwork design.
