Simple Knitted Beanie

This beanie is a perfect beginner project, made with soft gray yarn. The simple stockinette stitch creates a lovely texture, making this hat both stylish and practical.

Materials

Worsted weight yarn (approx. 100 yards in gray)
Size 8 (5.0 mm) knitting needles (straight or circular)
Stitch marker
Tapestry needle for weaving in ends

Gauge

18 stitches and 24 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch.

Abbreviations

K - knit
P - purl
St(s) - stitch(es)
RS - right side
WS - wrong side

Instructions

Cast on 80 stitches. Place a stitch marker to denote the beginning of the round if using circular needles.
Work in ribbing (k2, p2) for the first 2 inches to create a stretchy band.
Switch to stockinette stitch (knit every row) for the next 6 inches. You should have about 8 inches in total from the cast-on edge at this point.
Begin decreasing for the crown of the hat:

Round 1: *K8, k2tog* around. (You will have 72 stitches)
Round 2: Knit all stitches (72 stitches)
Round 3: *K7, k2tog* around. (You will have 64 stitches)
Round 4: Knit all stitches (64 stitches)
Round 5: *K6, k2tog* around. (You will have 56 stitches)
Round 6: Knit all stitches (56 stitches)
Round 7: *K5, k2tog* around. (You will have 48 stitches)
Round 8: Knit all stitches (48 stitches)
Round 9: *K4, k2tog* around. (You will have 40 stitches)
Round 10: Knit all stitches (40 stitches)
Round 11: *K3, k2tog* around. (You will have 32 stitches)
Round 12: Knit all stitches (32 stitches)
Round 13: *K2, k2tog* around. (You will have 24 stitches)
Round 14: Knit all stitches (24 stitches)
Round 15: *K1, k2tog* around. (You will have 16 stitches)
Round 16: Knit all stitches (16 stitches)
Round 17: K2tog around. (You will have 8 stitches)

Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail. Draw the tail through the remaining stitches and pull tight to close the top of the hat.
Weave in any remaining ends with a tapestry needle.
