Materials Needed

  • Yarn: Worsted weight yarn in red and white
  • Needles: Size US 6 (4mm) knitting needles
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors

Gauge

20 stitches and 26 rows = 4 inches

Instructions

Front and Back Panels

  1. With white yarn, cast on 50 stitches.
  2. Ribbing: Knit 1, Purl 1 across. Repeat for 8 rows.
  3. Change to stockinette stitch (knit one row, purl one row) for 10 rows in white.
  4. Heart Pattern: Follow this chart for 5 red heart motifs across the panel, keeping the rest of the stitches in white:
  5.  Row 1 (RS): k15, (k10 in red, k10 in white) x 2, k15 
     Row 2 (WS): p15, (p10 in red, p10 in white) x 2, p15 
  6. Continue in stockinette stitch maintaining the heart pattern for 18 rows.
  7. Complete the panel with 10 more rows in white yarn, maintaining stockinette stitch.
  8. Bind off.

Sleeves

  1. With white yarn, cast on 30 stitches.
  2. Ribbing: Knit 1, Purl 1 across. Repeat for 8 rows.
  3. Work in stockinette stitch and incorporate a single heart motif in the center of the sleeve as follows:
  4.  Row 1 (RS): k10, k10 in red, k10 
     Row 2 (WS): p10, p10 in red, p10 
  5. Continue for additional 18 rows, increasing 1 stitch each end every 6th row, keeping the motifs centered, until sleeve measures 22 rows.
  6. Bind off.

Finishing

  1. Sew shoulder seams together.
  2. Attach sleeves at armholes and sew side seams.
  3. Weave in all ends with a tapestry needle.
  4. Block pieces for smoothness.
