Materials
- Bulky yarn in dark brown (approximately 1000 yards)
- Medium weight yarn in black for claws and nose (approximately 100 yards)
- Light brown yarn for muzzle and inner ears (approximately 50 yards)
- Crochet hook size 8.0mm (L/11)
- Polyester stuffing
- Large blunt needle
- Safety eyes (optional) or black yarn for eyes
Abbreviations
- ch: chain
- sc: single crochet
- inc: increase (2 sc in one stitch)
- dec: decrease
- sl st: slip stitch
Body
- With dark brown yarn, ch 3 and join with sl st to form a ring.
- Round 1: Work 6 sc into ring. (6 sts)
- Round 2: Inc in each st around. (12 sts)
- Round 3: (Sc in next st, inc) around. (18 sts)
- Continue increasing in this manner until you reach round 20: (Sc in next 18 sts, inc) around. (120 sts)
- Rounds 21-40: Sc around (no increases). (120 sts each round)
- For the taper: (Sc in next 18 sts, dec) around until 6 sts remain. Bind off and weave in ends.
Head
- With dark brown yarn, ch 3 and form a ring.
- Round 1: 6 sc into ring. (6 sts)
- Round 2: Inc in each st around. (12 sts)
- Round 3-10: Continue in established pattern, increasing 6 sts each round evenly. (66 sts at end)
- Rounds 11-20: Sc around (no increases). (66 sts)
- Start decreasing like body until 12 sts remain, add stuffing before closing.
Muzzle
- With light brown yarn, ch 3 and form a ring.
- Round 1: 6 sc into ring. (6 sts)
- Round 2: Inc in each st around. (12 sts)
- Round 3: (Sc in next st, inc) around. (18 sts)
- Round 4-5: Sc around. Bind off leaving a long tail for sewing. Attach to head and embroider nose using black yarn.
Ears
- Make 2 with dark brown yarn.
- Ch 3, form a ring.
- Round 1: 6 sc into ring. (6 sts)
- Round 2: (Sc in next st, inc) around. (9 sts)
- Rounds 3-4: Sc around. (9 sts)
- Flatten, sew onto head.
Paws and Claws
- With dark brown, ch 8, turn.
- Row 1: Sc across, turn. (7 sts)
- Row 2-4: Continue sc rows.
- Using black yarn, attach claws by sewing little V shapes at one end of paw.
- Sew paws to appropriate corners of bear body.
Finishing
- Use black yarn to embroider eyes if not using safety eyes.
- Sew head to one end of bear's body.
- Weave in all ends securely.
