Crochet Table Placemats

Materials Needed:

  • Worsted weight cotton yarn (color: sunny yellow) - approximately 300 yards
  • Size H/8 (5 mm) crochet hook
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
  • Measuring tape

Gauge:

12 double crochets (dc) and 7 rows = 4 inches square.

Abbreviations:

  • ch - chain
  • dc - double crochet
  • sl st - slip stitch
  • sp - space
  • rnd - round

Instructions:

Creating the Foundation Chain:

  1. Start by making a slipknot and chain 60.

Row 1:

  1. In the 4th chain from the hook, work 1 dc.
  2. Continue to dc in each chain across (total of 58 dc).
  3. Turn your work.

Row 2:

  1. Ch 3 (counts as first dc), then dc in the next dc.
  2. Continue to dc across (total of 58 dc).
  3. Turn your work.

Row 3:

  1. Repeat Row 2 until you have a total of 8 rows or until the piece measures 10 inches in length.

Adding the Edging:

  1. Next, you will create the edging. Work 3 dc in the last dc of the row.
  2. Now, along the side of the placemat, work 1 dc in each row end until you reach the first side.
  3. In the corner, work 3 dc in the same space.
  4. Continue working along the top with 1 dc in each of the top stitches until you reach the next corner.
  5. Repeat the corner stitch: 3 dc in the corner, then work 1 dc in each row ends down the opposite side, and 3 dc in the last corner.
  6. Finally, join with a sl st to the top of the first dc in the round.

Finishing:

  1. To finish, cut the yarn leaving a long tail. Use the tapestry needle to weave in all yarn ends.
  2. Block your placemat if desired to even out the stitches.

Final Size:

Each finished placemat should measure approximately 12 inches in diameter.

Now you have a set of beautiful crochet placemats that are perfect for any occasion!
