Materials Needed
- Super Bulky Yarn (approximately 2000 yards)
- Size P/15 (10 mm) crochet hook
- Large metal ring (for hanging)
- Sturdy chain and hook (rated for adult weight) for mounting
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle
Gauge
4” x 4” (10 cm x 10 cm) square = 8 stitches x 8 rows in single crochet.
Abbreviations
- ch = chain
- sc = single crochet
- st = stitch
- sl st = slip stitch
- inc = increase (2 sc in next st)
- dec = decrease (sc 2 sts together)
Pattern
Base Circle
- Start with a magic ring. Ch 1.
- Round 1: Work 6 sc into the ring. Join with a sl st. (6 sts)
- Round 2: Ch 1, inc in each st around. Join with a sl st. (12 sts)
- Round 3: Ch 1, (sc, inc) around. Join with a sl st. (18 sts)
- Round 4: Ch 1, (2 sc, inc) around. Join with a sl st. (24 sts)
- Round 5: Ch 1, (3 sc, inc) around. Join with a sl st. (30 sts)
- Continue in this pattern, increasing 6 sts each round, until the base measures 38 inches in diameter.
Side Panels
- From the edge of the base, work in continuous rounds without joining.
- Round 1: Sc in each stitch around. (Continue to sc around each round.)
- Work evenly until the side measures 40 inches high, decreasing two stitches at designated points every 10 rows to contour the shape.
Top Cone
- Continue working evenly from the sides.
- Round 1: (Dec, 10 sc) repeat around.
- Continue this pattern, decreasing as necessary to shape the cone, until only 6 sts remain.
- Fasten off leaving a long tail.
Finishing
- Securely sew the top of the cone around the metal ring.
- Attach sturdy chains to the metal ring, ensuring everything is secure and balanced for safe hanging.
- Weave in any loose ends with a tapestry needle.
- Hang your cocoon securely from a solid mount, add pillows and throws, and enjoy!
