Materials:

  • Sport weight cotton yarn (approximately 800-1200 yards, depending on size)
  • Hook size: 4.0 mm (G hook)
  • Tape measure
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle
  • Stitch markers
  • Optional: elastic band for waist (if you prefer a fitted waist)

Sizes: XS, S, M, L, XL, 2XL, 3XL, 4XL, 5XL

Gauge:

20 stitches and 10 rows in shell stitch = 4 inches

Instructions:

  1. Waistband: Using a foundation chain, chain 10 (or a multiple of 5 for larger sizes). Join to form a ring, being careful not to twist the chain.
  2. Round 1: Chain 2 (counts as first double crochet), work 1 double crochet into each stitch around. Join with a slip stitch to the top of the chain 2. (10 stitches)
  3. Round 2: Chain 2, work 1 double crochet in the same stitch, 2 double crochets in each stitch around. Join. (20 stitches)
  4. Round 3: Chain 2, *1 double crochet in the next stitch, 2 double crochets in the next stitch*. Repeat from * to * around. Join. (30 stitches)
  5. Continue increasing by 10 stitches each round until you have 100 stitches for the waistline, ensuring to maintain the double crochet pattern.
  6. Once you've reached the desired stitch count, work in even rounds for approximately 4 inches for the waistband, then switch to the floral motif.
  7. Body: Begin the floral motif by chaining 5 to form a loop. Work the following: 3 double crochets, chain 2, 3 double crochets into the loop. This forms your first flower. Slip stitch to the base of the first chain 5 to close the flower.
  8. Repeat the floral motif around the entire waistband to create a lovely border.
  9. For the skirt body, chain 3 (counts as first double crochet), and work the shell stitch (5 double crochets in one stitch, skip 2 stitches, single crochet in the next stitch) around until you reach the desired length (approximately 36 inches or longer for maxi). You can create additional floral motifs by repeating the steps above as you go.
  10. Once you reach your desired length, finish with a final round of double crochets to give a clean edge.
  11. Weave in all loose ends with a tapestry needle.
  12. If using an elastic band for the waistband, sew it into place for added security.

Blocking: Wet block your skirt to enhance the lace motifs and ensure the shape lays flat.

Enjoy your new chic maxi skirt!
