Materials Needed:

• Lightweight cotton yarn in various colors
• 3.5 mm (E) crochet hook
• Scissors
• Tapestry needle

Gauge:

Gauge is not critical for this project, but aim for a loose fabric.

Finished Size:

Approximately 6 inches long and 4 inches wide.

Stitch Abbreviations:

• ch = chain
• sc = single crochet
• dc = double crochet
• sl st = slip stitch
• tr = triple crochet

Instructions:

Body of the Butterfly:

1. With your chosen color, ch 20. 2. Row 1: Starting from the second ch from the hook, sc in each ch across. (19 sc) 3. Rows 2-4: Ch 1, turn; sc in each stitch across. 4. Fasten off, leave a long tail for sewing.

Wings (Make 2):

**Upper Wings:** 1. With a new color, ch 11. 2. Row 1: Starting from the second ch from hook, dc in next 4 ch, ch 3, dc in that same ch, dc in next 5 ch. Ch 1, turn. (Total of 1 large wing) 3. Row 2: Ch 1, dc in first st, ch 3, dc in next st, dc in top of the previous row (the ch 3). Repeat for the second wing. 4. Fasten off with a tail for sewing. **Lower Wings:** 1. With a different color, ch 8. 2. Row 1: Starting from second ch from hook, dc in next 3 ch, ch 3, dc in that same ch, dc in remaining ch. Ch 1, turn. 3. Row 2: Ch 1, dc in first st, ch 2, dc in next st, dc in top of previous row. 4. Fasten off with a tail for sewing.

Assembly:

1. Sew the wings onto the body, layering the larger upper wings first, followed by the smaller lower wings. 2. Secure all pieces tightly to avoid reaching out. 3. Attach a long piece of yarn to the top of the butterfly for the bookmark tail, or use a small pom-pom for a decorative touch.
