Materials Needed:

  • Worsted weight yarn in several colors (approximately 1000 yards total)
  • Size I (5.5 mm) crochet hook
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle for weaving in ends

Stitch Abbreviations:

  • ch - chain
  • sc - single crochet
  • dc - double crochet
  • sl st - slip stitch

Gauge:

4 inches = 10 stitches of DC and 7 rows in pattern

Instructions:

Rug Base:

  1. Chain 85 for the foundation row.
  2. Row 1: In the 3rd chain from the hook, make 1 dc. Continue making 1 dc in each chain across. Chain 2, turn.
  3. Row 2: Make 1 dc in the first stitch, then alternate 1 sc and 1 dc across the row for the remaining stitches. Chain 2, turn.
  4. Repeat Rows 1 and 2 until the piece measures approximately 60 inches long or your desired length.

Stripe Pattern:

  1. Change yarn color every 12 rows or as desired. Attach new color with a slip knot in the first stitch of the new row.
  2. Continue in the established pattern, ensuring to maintain the correct tension for even stripes.

Border:

  1. Once the desired length is achieved, switch to a contrasting color for the border.
  2. Round 1: Attach yarn at one corner, ch 1, sc evenly around the entire rug, placing 3 sc in each corner stitch for a rounded effect.
  3. Round 2: Chain 3 (counts as 1 dc), then make a dc in each sc around. Join with a sl st to the top of the starting ch 3.
  4. Fasten off and weave in all ends with a yarn needle.

Now your bright and cheerful picnic rug is complete! Enjoy using it for all your outdoor gatherings. Don’t forget to experiment with color combinations!
