Basic Ribbed Beanie

Materials

• Worsted weight yarn (approximately 100 yards) in pink
• Set of US size 8 (5.0 mm) double-pointed needles or a circular needle if using the magic loop method
• Stitch marker
• Yarn needle for weaving in ends
• Scissors

Gauge

18 stitches and 24 rows = 4 inches in ribbing stitch.

Instructions

1. Cast On: CO 64 stitches using your preferred method. This will give you a circumference suitable for a child’s head.

5. Shaping the Crown:
   • Round 1: *k8, k2tog*; repeat from * to * around. (58 stitches remain)
   • Round 2: Knit all stitches.
   • Round 3: *k7, k2tog*; repeat from * to * around. (52 stitches remain)
   • Round 4: Knit all stitches.
   • Round 5: *k6, k2tog*; repeat from * to * around. (46 stitches remain)
   • Round 6: Knit all stitches.
   • Round 7: *k5, k2tog*; repeat from * to * around. (40 stitches remain)
   • Round 8: Knit all stitches.
   • Round 9: *k4, k2tog*; repeat from * to * around. (34 stitches remain)
   • Round 10: Knit all stitches.
   • Round 11: *k3, k2tog*; repeat from * to * around. (28 stitches remain)
   • Round 12: Knit all stitches.
   • Round 13: *k2, k2tog*; repeat from * to * around. (22 stitches remain)
   • Round 14: Knit all stitches.
   • Round 15: *k1, k2tog*; repeat from * to * around. (16 stitches remain)
   • Round 16: Knit all stitches.

6. Finishing: Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread the tail through a yarn needle and draw it through the remaining stitches. Pull tight to close the crown of the hat. Weave in ends securely.
7. Blocking (optional): Gently block the hat by wetting it and laying it flat to dry, shaping it as desired.
