Heart-Shaped Cloth Coaster

Materials

• 100% cotton yarn (worsted weight) in creamy white (approx. 50g)
• 4.5mm (US 7) crochet hook
• Scissors
• Tapestry needle for weaving in ends

Gauge

16 stitches and 20 rows = 4 inches in single crochet. Keep in mind that gauge is not critical for this project, but it can affect the final size.

Abbreviations

• ch = chain
• sc = single crochet
• st = stitch
• sl st = slip stitch

Instructions

1. Start with a Slip Knot: Create a slip knot and chain 12.
2. Round 1: In the second chain from the hook, make 1 sc. Continue to make 1 sc in each of the next 10 chains. In the last chain, make 3 sc (this creates the rounded top part of the heart). Now, working on the opposite side of the chain, make 1 sc in the next 10 chains. Join with a sl st to the first sc. (Total: 24 sc)
3. Round 2: Ch 1. In the same stitch, make 2 sc. Make 2 sc in each of the next 2 sc (this makes the tops of the heart plump). Make 1 sc in the next 6 sc. Make 2 sc in each of the next 2 sc. Make 1 sc in the next 6 sc. Join with a sl st to the first sc. (Total: 36 sc)
4. Rounds 3-4: Repeat Round 2. (Total: 48 sc)
5. Round 5: Ch 1. Sc in each stitch around. Join with a sl st. (Total: 48 sc)
6. Fringe (optional): To add a lovely fringe, cut about 20 pieces of yarn, each 6 inches long. Fold each piece in half and use your tapestry needle to pull through the last round's stitches on the edges of the coaster. Position evenly around the edge.
7. Finish: Cut the working yarn, leaving a few inches for weaving. Pull the yarn through the last loop to secure. Weave in all ends using the tapestry needle.
