Instructions
Step 1: Cast On
CO 60 stitches using the long tail method.
Step 2: Ribbing
Rows 1-8: Work in K2, P2 ribbing. This means you will knit 2 stitches, then purl 2 stitches across the entire row. End with a K2. Turn your work at the end of each row.
Step 3: Body of the Hat
Row 9 (RS): Switch to stockinette stitch. Knit every stitch across the row. Continue to knit each row until the piece measures approximately 7 inches from the cast-on edge.
Step 4: Shaping the Crown
Now we will begin to shape the top of the hat:
- Row 1: K2, K2tog (knit 2 together) across the row. (45 stitches)
- Row 2: Knit all stitches.
- Row 3: K1, K2tog across the row. (30 stitches)
- Row 4: Knit all stitches.
- Row 5: K2tog across the row. (15 stitches)
- Row 6: Knit all stitches.
- Row 7: K2tog across the row. (7 stitches)
Step 5: Close the Top
Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail (about 12 inches). Thread the tail through the remaining stitches using a yarn needle. Pull tight to close the top of the hat, then secure by weaving in the end.
Step 6: Making the Pom-Pom
Using a pom-pom maker or cardboard, make a pom-pom using the same orange yarn. Attach it to the top of the hat by sewing it securely with the yarn needle.
Step 7: Weave in Ends
Make sure to weave in any remaining yarn ends using the yarn needle to ensure a clean finish.
Final Size
This hat fits most adults and older children comfortably. You can adjust the number of cast-on stitches for a larger or smaller fit.
Enjoy your cozy pom-pom hat, and stay warm!
